Meeting Michael Kellymor at North Wall Quay, Ireland

Michael, with a degree in civil engineering started in the residential industry. He travelled a lot building and conceiving units for medical care and residential: Middle East, Saudi, Sweden, he developed the conception of multiple residential units in Dublin. He joined our team in Voltalia to be Portfolio Project Manager after Voltalia won the biggest contract in Ireland and start the Irish team that will lead those 300MW from the construction to the operation, quite a challenge ahead.

Long story short about Voltalia Dublin

Born not only to enjoy a good office location to start early Saint Patrick’s Day, Voltalia Dublin Offices are in the urges to install a team after winning not 3 MW project but the first of its kind on the country: a 300 MW solar project countryside. This impressive project is aligned with the aim of the country to move forward with the energy transition and apparently Ireland is not only a place of rain, but it is also a place of sun.

Michael path – Portfolio Project Manager Ireland

Michael, with a degree in civil engineering started in the residential industry. “I suppose I was always interested in the renewables industry. I always actually thought it was I suppose the way things are going really, the future as well. So, it's nice to do a job that you can believe in as well.”

Michael Kellymor, EPC Portfolio Manager at Voltalia

Right place, right time: aligning the Ireland objectives

“Politically, socially and there's as a result, a huge amount of projects in the pipeline”.

Ireland Government expect to be carbon neutral by 2040. To do that they have to invest a lot in renewable energy: by developing those contracts the government is pushing the energy transition and the realization of our project. The energy state: Electricity Supply Board is pushing the arrival of renewable energy, and the public sentiment is behind this industry.

"The energy context in Ireland is moving fast. Electricity Supply Board manage the Energy Transition in the country, and they are looking to be carbon neutral by 2040. In addition to that, we have a growing population, and especially a growing technology industry."

Growing population and technology industries are consuming a lot of power, a power that is important comparing the size of the country. Voltalia was the first to win and to take the challenge of this size of contract so today, Voltalia is the country biggest construction contractor. Today 2 projects of the 300 MW are in construction, 74 MW and 128 MW and aside for other clients Voltalia in doing 100 MW, so the team in currently recruiting at multiple job position to lead those dimensional projects.

Working for the future

“300 MW of solar projects divided in 4 projects and today 2 are already over and ready to produce meanwhile the other 2 are in their early works: selecting and making the EPC contract for the construction. The challenge is important since a very few people have already done this dimensional project with a big engineering part: facing the weather and managing the delay. After winning this project Voltalia needed to build a local team with local knowledge, as is it important at Voltalia to work locally.

So we're looking for people with transferable skills. People who are flexible and adaptable enough and resourceful enough to be able to take that role on and make it their own as well. I suppose we've got a mix of electrical, mechanical and civil engineers in our project management team. Personally, I'm a civil engineer by background.”

From residential to the biggest renewable projects in Ireland, Michael has some career feedback to share

And put the advice of those followed myself and I suppose because you're in it, it's always a changing industry and especially when you're changing cultures and you might be even changing country, it's to always remain adaptable, flexible and resourceful.  I think if you keep those three key cores.

Adaptable: you career might push you to unknow challenges and you need to be able to roll and adapt to those changes in order to grow

Flexible: this mightn’t be your job but let’s be flexible, let’s get done it as well so you aren’t immobilize in your project

Resourceful: be able to take a tasks that it is not yours and manage to learn how to solve it : problem solving, communication using your own resources to solve something new
